Fashion Leaders Series: How to create your own unique voice in a crowded online space with Brooke Johnson Isaak

Join Jacqueline for this instalment of our SFA Fashion Leaders Series with our guest, and SFA Board Member, Brooke Johnson Isaak!

Brooke is a criminal defence lawyer, as well as the owner and operator of ‘The Monday Best’, a workwear style blog. ‘The Monday Best’ seeks to redefine what it means to dress “professionally” by moving away from masculine norms and incorporating color and femininity into workwear. Office wear isn’t the only thing you will find on ‘The Monday Best’, as Brooke also uses her blog to shed light on the various barriers and hurdles that women face within the workplace as she openly discusses everyday sexism. She is excited to be part of the SFA Board and it’s initiatives to promote the fashion sector within the province of Saskatchewan.

In Brooke’s interview, the topic “Social Conversations: How to create your own unique voice in a crowded online space.” was explored.

Check out the interview video, as well as a summary of Brooke’s key points below!

Key Points

Growing an Audience

  • Research, research, research! Before Brooke started posting, she did a lot of research on how Instagram works.

  • Be authentic! Speak about what matters and what’s important to you. The conversations that people have behind closed doors, have them out in the open. Lot’s of people may feel like they’re alone or no one is thinking about what they’re thinking. While there's a lot out there about just growing your following, it’s just as important to bring in the people who support you. Your page doesn’t have to appease everyone, that’s not possible.

  • Be genuine and have a strong connection with the people who are following you and engaging with you.

Contributing to Important Conversations

  • Ask yourself what you’re doing to help what’s going on in the world. When you have a significant following, Brooke compares it to being the “mayor” of that city. You can direct your followers’ eyes to important matters in the world that people need to be talking about.

Building Partnerships

  • When building partnerships, Brooke always makes sure that she sees a need for the product. Make sure the product actually provides a solution! Would you use this and incorporate it into your everyday life?

  • She also ensures that the partnership can involve or be incorporated into a work setting. Be sure that you can speak about it in a way that you find important!

  • Do research before you decide to go forward in a partnership. Find out if they align themselves with things that you do and decide whether the company is the right match for you.
